Your First Session: What to Expect

Generally, when a client comes in several things occur:

  • The presenting issue or reason for seeking therapy is discussed and I get a feel for what is happening with the client and how I can best be of service
  • My goal is to create a safe, empathic and comfortable environment in which the client is able to share issues and concerns
  • I usually take some history and ask questions, gathering helpful information to make an assessment of the client and help me determine how I may want to work collaboratively with the client through the therapeutic process
  • We may talk about client’s goals for therapy
  • In addition we will address scheduling of sessions, fees and consent for treatment along with any other paperwork that may be necessary
  • Most importantly, it is my hope that we get a sense of connection, along with how it may feel to work together
